Naples was, unordinarily, the first city in Italy I truly fell in love with. Coming from New York as my hometown, the energy of Naples was both familiar and on a kinetic vibe of its own. The Talented Mr. Ripley scene, when Dickie takes his new acquaintance Freddie from Ischia to Naples to see a jazz show—although the clothing has changed—captures the essence today.
Over the decades, there are stories of nights I couldn't, or wouldn't even begin to explain, because the singular moments of those nights simply cannot be tracked in a linear sequence of events. Like the time we followed a middle-aged DJ to an eclectic underground club where records were spinning, playing the rarest of '70s psychedelic East African rock. Or the random dinner invitation to a private white-tablecloth, polished-silver dinner at the Excelsior Hotel, dining with the elite of Napoli. Where often this city is overlooked, quickly rushed from the airport to the Amalfi Coast, Positano, or the islands, Naples is a city not to miss, if not for at least a night.
This map comprises some of the great eateries and pizzerias in Naples. And if you haven't had a pizza in the heart of Naples, you have not had Napolitana pizza. Capri does not count.
